In order to earn departmental honors, students must maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5 in their Spanish coursework. Students then must complete an additional six hours of coursework in Spanish 496 during which time they write two research papers. They also have a final oral defense, where they present these two research papers to 3 faculty members in the department and answer their questions.

Dr. Dennis Klein completed his BA in Spanish in 1965 and his MA in Spanish in 1967. We are grateful for his dedication to the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and its students as reflected in his creation of the Dennis Klein Scholarships that allow us to make awards to an outstanding Spanish major who is in their junior year and to a rising student scholar.

José María de Osma was a professor in the KU Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the mid twentieth century. The fund established in his memory allows us to make several awards to undergraduate students, including our awards for a Senior outstanding major in Spanish and for four outstanding minors.
