CALL FOR PAPERS

DEADLINE: MAY 1, 2019

One Hundred Years of Hispanism in Kansas and Beyond

Wednesday-Friday, October 16-18, 2019

2018-2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the University of Kansas’s founding of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. In 1918, under the leadership of Arthur Leslie Owen, the Spanish and Portuguese faculty separated from the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures to establish the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literatures.

Across the decades, the department has striven to promote intellectual empowerment and deepen understandings of cultural diversity within the Spanish and Portuguese speaking worlds.  This year we are honored to acknowledge our remarkable past as well as consider how, as inheritors of a century’s worth of achievements, we can advance the legacy of excellence in teaching and research.

In the spirit of remembering our past as well as looking ahead toward the future of “Hispanism” in Kansas and beyond, we invite proposals for individual presentations, special sessions and roundtable discussions on any aspect related to the literatures and cultures of the Spanish and Lusophone worlds as well as pedagogical approaches to teaching Spanish and Portuguese. At the turn of the 20th century, the term Hispanism opened venues for the inclusion of the Spanish and Portuguese speaking worlds in higher education. Over time, Hispanic studies has brought forward a wide range of cultural expressions, challenging disciplinary boundaries within the Social Sciences and the Humanities. Reflecting on this rich history, we especially welcome and value the contributions of KU alumni and former faculty as we celebrate our centennial. Proposals will be accepted in English, Spanish and Portuguese related, but not limited, to the following themes and approaches to Hispanism:

  •  Hispanism in Kansas
  • Critical Approximations to and Constructions of Hispanism (For example: the limitations and possibilities of Hispanism as a category of teaching, learning, and analysis)
  • Shifting gears in the 21st century: Latinx Studies, Afro-Latinx Studies, Indigenous Studies
  • Research by alumni that speaks to their work and collaborations with KU faculty (Ruins in the Hispanic world, Writers of the Latin American vanguard, “Crossfire” in Hispanic literature and culture, Gender and nation in Spanish cultural production, Performance in Hispanic theatre/film, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and Colonial Studies)
  • New Paradigms in Teaching Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
  • Gender Studies and Queer Identities
  • Racial/Gendered Peripheries
  • Spanish Civil War in American Universities
  • Performative Aspects and Innovations in Hispanic Theatre, Poetry, Art and Film
  • Migration and Border Studies
  • Regionalism/Nationalism/Post-Nationalism
  • Literature and the Other Arts
  • Comparative and Transatlantic Perspectives

Please send 250-word abstract for 20-minute presentations to spanport_cfp@ku.edu by Wednesday, May 1, 2019

To submit a proposal for a panel or roundtable discussion, please email spanport_cfp@ku.edu.
