Visiting Poet: Denice Frohman
The University of Kansas Department of Spanish and Portuguese will welcome, Denice Frohman, educator and award-winning poet, for another riveting slam poetry performance. She last performed at the University of Kansas in April 2016.
Denice Frohman is a CantoMundo Fellow, former Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion, and National Association of Latino Arts & Cultures grant recipient. Her work explores the nuances of race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and the “in-betweeness” that exists in everyone. She hopes to inspire people, particularly young people of color, to see themselves as writers and that their stories are worth telling.
“We are excited to bring Denice to campus to engage our students and the KU community about Latinx perspectives through her dynamic performance. A core mission of the Spanish Language Program is to encourage our students to explore the diverse perspectives and intersecting experiences of the many groups that identify culturally with the Spanish language,” said Amy Rossomondo, Associate Professor of Spanish at KU.
Rossomondo emphasized that “Denice’s unique voice creates the opportunity for a learning experience outside of the classroom that will hopefully inspire all in attendance to use their own voices to promote understanding and social justice in our increasingly complex society.”
Frohman will perform on Wednesday, March 07, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Memorial Union, located at 1301 Jayhawk Boulevard, Lawrence, Kansas. The event is open to the public.
This event is sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, GRASP, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Multicultural Education Fund (Multicultural Student Government), Office of the Vice Provost of Student Affairs (Pepsi Program Fund), Latin American Student Union, Latinx Faculty and Staff Council, and Sexuality and Gender Diversity Faculty and Staff Council.
